Principal and Founder
Blue
Raven Co.'s founder, Kenneth Louis, is a member of the Leq'a:mel
(Lakahahmen - "the level meeting place") First
Nation, located in Coast Salish territory in Deroche, British
Columbia. Fueled by a life-long interest and involvement in
the culture of the First Nations on the West Coast of British
Columbia, and born from a desire to promote the artistic talents
of his people, Ken has established Blue Raven Company.
In 1995, Ken graduated from McGill University in Montreal with
an Honors Degree in Biochemistry. During this time, he conducted
research at the McGill Cancer Center and completed his honors
project at the world-famous Montreal Neurological Institute.
From 1996 - 1998, Ken tutored physics and chemistry for the
First Nations Professional Sciences Access Program at the University
of British Columbia. His goal is to eventually attend medical
school at the University of British Columbia.
Three years ago, he started working on ideas for his company.
Since the death of his grandfather, with whom he had a special
bond and who provided for him an important link to his past,
he decided to take time from his academic life and focus on
his culture. Ken feels his continuing respect for his culture
and his interest in the talents of his people can be facilitated
by the worldwide distribution of works of art unique to his
heritage.
Like the artists he represents, Ken belongs to a generation
of natives that was raised with a core of First Peoples values
and has to contend with the powerful forces, which shape life
in the 21st century.
As voiced by Lyle Wilson, a respected Haisla carver, "Indians
possess values which were once fundamental to all humans: respect
for the environment, a caretaker's role in relationship to the
land, and a recognition that other human beings will follow
us to reap the benefits or consequences of our actions. Such
concepts are old and reflect a humankind attuned to the world
- an awareness now largely engulfed by and subservient to today's
technologies..."
It is this philosophy that guides the vision for Blue Raven
Company.
